Crabs of Qatar

The Blue Swimming Crab

The Blue Swimming Crab lives in coastal areas near coral reefs, in mangroves and in seagrass and algal beds.
It burrows in sand if disturbed. It’s a fast-moving swimmer and predator.
Primarily carnivores but also eat marine plants and seagrass. Juveniles tend to remain in shallow intertidal areas; they mature at about one year of age.

The Violet Crab

Violet crabs live on the bottom of the intertidal zone, on muddy sand flats and in mangrove lagoons.
They don’t spend much time on the surface as they like to be partially buried even when the tide is out.
They are slow-moving carnivores, with one claw enlarged and specialised as a powerful crusher, adapted to deal with hard prey.

The Ghost Crab

The Ghost Crab inhabits deep burrows in the intertidal zone of sand beaches.
Males build towers of sand during the breeding season. The animals are primarily nocturnal and only emerge from their burrows at dusk.
They are fast-moving scavengers and predators of small animals.
