Why are Mangroves Unique?

What are Mangroves?
Mangroves are forests of salt-tolerant trees!
They actually like salt!
Even though they are subject to tides they still need fresh water to grow.

Where do Mangroves grow?
You can find mangroves in coastal and tidal wetlands.
In Qatar, there are specific mangroves:
The Avicennia Marina
The Grey or White Mangrove
Mangroves also grow in other places around the world.

What do Mangroves need to grow?
Mangroves require slow water currents.
Lots of sediment to put their roots.
Protection from large waves.

Why are mangroves special?
They can live close to the sea.
They help stop the coastline eroding!
They store more carbon dioxide than any other ecosystem on Earth!
They support so much life above and below water!
They make new land by collecting dirt from the water, over time, this makes the ground higher.

Why are mangroves important?
Mangroves can grow in places where regular trees would find it very hard to survive.
Sometimes, mangroves are planted in places where there were no trees before.
This is because they help nature and make the environment healthier.
This is called AFFORESTATION!

What are the threats to mangroves?
Mangroves are cut down to create space to farm fish and shrimp.
Plastic pollution affects mangroves when plastic gets caught in roots and trees.
This hurts the mangroves and the organisms that live in them.
