Sustainable communities are places where ALL people can live and work
Communities for now, and in the future, that can live in harmony with nature!

Cities are HUGE!
They are areas with large numbers of people.
They provide a wide range of facilities like universities and hospitals.

People can move to cities for many reasons.
There are more jobs, better choices for education and more health facilities.
This is called urban migration.

Urban sustainability!
Urban sustainability ensures that cities don't pollute too much and don't consume too many natural resources.
Allowing residents to live in a safe, healthy environment and have a good quality of life.

London is one of the world’s MOST sustainable cities
London is pushing to achieve Net Zero!
Here are some examples of how London is thinking about a sustainable future.

The Greater London area has over 3000 parks!
Around 40% of the entire Greater London area consists of parks and green spaces.

Water conservation
Collecting rainwater for gardens and the use of water meters in properties.

Energy conservation
Using low energy lighting and appliances and MORE renewable energy.

Waste recycling
Recycling household and office waste.
Encouraging people to 'reduce, reuse, recycle'.
Using 'grey' water to flush toilets. This is generally waste water from basins, showers and washing machines.

Green spaces
Increasing the number of parks and planting more trees.
For example, Queen Elizabeth Park in London.

Congestion zone
Charging people to drive in the city centre.

Bike sharing
Pick up a bike to travel around the city!

Public transport
Encouraging people to use the tube and the bus.

London is also thinking CREATIVELY!

Any space can make a green space.

Guerrilla gardening!
Gardening on abandoned sites or neglected spaces.

Co-housing!
More co-housing.
Copper Lane is a co-housing project.
A community of six individual houses with communal areas.

The Kingston Pound
A currency valid ONLY in Kingston-upon-Thames.
A community currency that encourages people to spend their money locally.

Freecycle network
Give your unwanted items to someone that needs them.

Y:Cube
New housing for people.
Many can’t afford buying or renting in London.

There are many INNOVATIVE and SUSTAINABLE projects happening all over the world!
Green spaces in unusual places!
Bangkok has turned an old railway track into a park!
Encouraging awareness around the benefits of having green spaces in cities.

Vertical forests
There isn’t much space in cities.
Some countries have started to plant upwards!
There are projects in Italy, Switzerland and China.

Rainwater harvesting
Mexico City has a lack of freshwater.
The city is tackling this crisis with a rainwater harvesting project.

Homes from shipping containers!
When shipping containers that have reached the end of their lives.
They are now being turned into homes.

Food for people in need
The Écotable community is helping people in need.
24 restaurants in Paris provide more than 12,000 meals to students with food insecurity.
