What is Hydropower?

Learn about hydropower and it's advantages and disadvantages.

What is Hydropower?

Hydropower is created using the movement of water.

Hydroelectric power plants are always near a source of water.

Hydropower is a renewable energy source.

This means that using a dam or a river to generate electricity doesn't use up any limited resources!

Dams are the most common type of hydropower plant. A dam is used to direct water through a turbine.

Rivers uses a constant flow of water which is used to generate electricity as it passes.

Tidal power uses the power of the sea tides and waves to create energy.

Pumped Storage is moving water between reservoirs at different elevations to provide electricity on-demand.

How does Hydropower work?

The pressure of flowing water pushes against the blades of the turbines and makes them spin!

The rotating turbines are connected to a generator which makes electricity.

The electricity then travels through transformers and transmission lines to homes and businesses!

What are the advantages of Hydropower?

Advantages

• Water is a renewable source of energy

• It can generate power and be stopped quickly in an emergency

• Hydroelectric generators last for around 100 years

What are the disadvantages of Hydropower?

Disadvantages

• The cost of building a hydroelectric system can be extremely high

• Dams and larger power stations may disrupt environments and ecosystems may get damaged

• Building large dams may mean humans have to move home

What do think? Is hydropower the best source of renewable energy?

If not, what is?

Save water!

• Try taking a shower instead of a bath

• Turn off taps when you are not using them

• How else can you save water?
