Explore how water is an integral part of everything you wear, eat, and use daily.
In this episode, embark on an exciting adventure with Frankie the Fox as she unveils the secret life of water, introducing the concept of virtual water. In this Earth Cubs episode, children will explore how water is an integral part of everything they wear, eat, and use daily. The focus is on understanding virtual water, its impact on the planet, and how to reduce our water footprint at home and school.
Ask the children why water is considered a part of everything we wear, eat, and use.
Encourage them to think about their favourite foods and discuss together how water is involved in growing, making, and transporting those items e.g pizza, what ingredients are needed to make the pizza, where it is made, and how it gets to the shops.
Ask the children to draw a cup of water on their whiteboards, and talk them through a food journey. Ask the children to hold up their whiteboards when they think water is needed in the process.
Show children the recycling symbol and ask them if they know what it stands for.
Ask children why it is important to recycle.
Explain that buying lots of things can impact the environment and use too much water!
Ask the children, can water be recycled? Take a class vote!
Think about how our actions have a bigger impact, they impact the whole planet.
Using too much virtual water can lead to not having enough/water scarcity in places where water resources are already stressed.
This can lead to droughts, affecting agriculture, ecosystems, and communities that rely on those water sources.
Ask the children to create a meal using as little virtual water as possible.
Together show children all the foods on the water footprint calculator (website provided).
Search for the (S) sign together in the corner, explain that means those foods have only used a small amount of water.
Take time to read other food items that had a high virtual water footprint.
As a class or select volunteers, to go and speak to the school cooks, tell them what you have learned about virtual water and plan a school low virtual water lunch.
