Howler Monkey Fun Facts!

Let's learn some fun facts about HOWL-er monkeys!

1. They are LOUD!

They are one of the loudest land animals and can be heard 3 miles away. Only male howler monkeys make the howling sound and use it to mark out their territory.

A special bone in their throat makes their calls so loud!

2. A tall tale

Their tails act like another hand and lets them hold up their whole body weight, as well as swing from tree to tree! Their tails can be 5x the length of their body.

3. The smell of success

Howler monkeys have such great noses, they can smell ripe fruit up to 2km away.

4. Home is where the leaves are

They feed mostly on leaves at the top of the rainforest canopy and don't move very far. They get almost all the water they need from what they eat!

5. Endangered species

Sadly some of the 15 species of howler monkey are endangered. This is due to habitat loss and hunting.
