Global Goal 5 Gender Equality
Michelle Parkes ·
Global Goal 5 is Gender Equality, and it's all about making sure that everyone, regardless of their gender, has the same rights, opportunities, and freedoms.

Can you believe that in some parts of the world, women are still not allowed to vote or own property? That's just not fair, and it's one of the things that Global Goal 5 is trying to change.
Another important part of Gender Equality is making sure that women and girls have access to education. Did you know that there are still millions of girls around the world who are not able to go to school? That means they miss out on all sorts of opportunities, and they're not able to reach their full potential.
But it's not just about girls and women - Global Goal 5 is also about making sure that men and boys are treated fairly, and that everyone has the chance to live their best life, no matter their gender.
What progress has been made?
Since the adoption of Global Goal 5 in 2015, there have been some notable progress made towards achieving gender equality worldwide.
For instance, there have been improvements in access to education for girls, with more girls enrolled in primary and secondary schools than ever before. In fact, the number of girls out of school globally has decreased by over half since 2000. Additionally, more women are now in leadership positions in both the public and private sectors.
In terms of legal reforms, there have been some notable advances in the fight for gender equality as well. In several countries, discriminatory laws that prevented women from doing things like owning property, inheriting assets or accessing certain jobs have been amended or abolished.
However, there is still a long way to go to achieve gender equality. Women are still underrepresented in many fields, such as science and politics. Violence against women and girls remains a pervasive issue worldwide, and the gender pay gap persists in many countries.
Despite the challenges, we believe that the progress made so far is a reason for optimism, and it shows that when we work together, we can make meaningful progress towards achieving gender equality for all.
What can kids do to help with Gender Equality?
- Educate themselves and others: Kids can learn about gender equality issues and share their knowledge with others. They can talk to their friends and family about the importance of treating everyone equally and with respect.
- Support organisations that promote gender equality
- Be an ally: Kids can support their female peers and show that they value their contributions. They can be supportive of girls who are interested in traditionally male-dominated fields, and encourage their friends to be inclusive and accepting of others.
- Challenge stereotypes: Kids can challenge gender stereotypes and norms that limit the potential of girls and women. They can challenge the idea that certain careers or activities are only for one gender, and promote the idea that everyone should have equal opportunities to pursue their interests and passions.
