Twenty teachers across the U.S. and U.K., building a community of educators to prepare students for the energy future
As educators around the world are recognised during National Teacher Appreciation Week, National Grid and Earth Cubs today announce the inaugural cohort of teachers from the United States and the United Kingdom selected for the National Grid Energy Literacy Fellowship. This first-of-its-kind global energy literacy exchange program led by an energy company is designed to build a community of educators who can engage young learners on critical energy topics and help prepare students to thrive in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.
The National Grid Energy Literacy Fellowship equips educators with advanced instructional strategies, real-world STEM applications and leadership skills they can bring back to their schools and communities. The programme bridges classroom learning with how math and science are used every day in the energy sector. The fellowship also emphasises collaboration and knowledge-sharing, enabling educators to extend the program’s impact far beyond the initial cohort.
"National Grid's commitment to supporting STEM educators runs deep," said Dr. Robert Simmons III, Vice President US Social Impact & Community Engagement for National Grid. "Over the years, we've provided educational materials and resources to thousands of educators across our U.S. and U.K. service areas, reaching countless students with the tools they need to understand the energy systems shaping their world. Through this inaugural Energy Literacy Fellowship, we're going further, equipping teachers with the sustained training and peer community required to bring energy literacy and sustainability into classrooms at scale and empowering them to spark change in the communities they serve.
The inaugural fellowship will support 20 primary/elementary STEM educators in a one-week immersive experience designed to bring energy, safety, sustainability, math and science to life in the classroom. Fellows will travel to Warwick, U.K. in summer 2026, where they will engage with Earth Cubs educational content, including animated videos, an app for interactive games, printed lesson plans and activities, and learn directly from National Grid professionals how STEM concepts are applied in real-world energy operations to see up close what they will be teaching in the classroom.
During the week-long experience, fellows will participate in:
- Hands-on STEM workshops
- Interactive sessions with National Grid professionals and clean energy experts
- Behind-the-scenes visits to National Grid facilities
The announcement comes as teachers are celebrated during National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 4-8, 2026, underscoring National Grid’s ongoing commitment to educators as catalysts for long-term community impact. STEM education is a core pillar of National Grid’s Grid for Good social impact initiative which is supported by shareholder contributions.
The company has partnered with Earth Cubs in the U.K. for three years providing videos on safety, energy and innovation. This fellowship marks a significant expansion of that partnership across both countries.
“Through our partnership, National Grid Earth Cubs video content has been streamed by over 250,000 viewers,” said Michelle Parkes, Head of Growth and Impact for Earth Cubs. “In classrooms, the programme has reached more than 120,000 students and over 4,000 educators. We look forward to building on this momentum and expanding our global impact with new videos and teaching resources.”
In addition to the in-person fellowship, National Grid and Earth Cubs plan to launch a Digital Academy in autumn 2026, extending energy literacy resources to hundreds more educators. Interested teachers can sign up on the Earth Cubs website.
