What is Net Zero?

Learn about what Net Zero means and why it's important!

What is Net Zero?

What does Net Zero mean?

Net Zero is balancing the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount which is removed from the atmosphere.

We will reach net zero when we are not adding any more greenhouse gases than the amount which can be taken away.

What are greenhouse gases?

Greenhouse gases are gases in Earth’s atmosphere that trap heat.

Can you think of any greenhouse gases?

The main greenhouse gases are:

Carbon dioxide
Methane
Ozone
Nitrous oxide
Water vapour
Chlorofluorocarbons

Why is Net Zero important?

Scientists agree that becoming Net Zero is the main way to ensure that we reverse the effects of global warming.

Global warming means our Earth is getting hotter.

Can you think of any ways this impacts our planet?

Flooded river and cars
Flooding
Drought
Melting ice
Snowstorm

It's like a seesaw.

As long as greenhouse gas emissions are equal to removal from the atmosphere it will help reduce harmful emissions.

What is a Carbon Footprint?

A Carbon Footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by something or someone.

Can you think of things that may have a large carbon footprint?

A large plane flying in the skies
Planes have a BIG carbon footprint!

Places, companies, and events have carbon footprints too.

Your school can have a carbon footprint based on how much electricity it uses, the school dinners you eat and the items you use like paper and pens.

Get to Net Zero!

To get to Net Zero all of these different people and groups must work together to reduce their Carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions.
