Find out more about poverty and how to help.

Explain that today we will be learning about Mumbai - a country in India.

Ask the children to complete the follow statements about Mumbai:

I know… I think… I wonder…

Present the slide 'What will you learn?' of the What is Poverty? Presentation on the whiteboard.

Which resources can we use to find out where Mumbai is? Which would be best? Which is easiest to use?

In groups, find Mumbai using an online map and a physical map. Ask children to compare the two resources.

In pairs, tell the children to ask each other "do you know what poverty is?"

The children can then share their ideas with the class.

Share the slide ‘Poverty is all over the world’.

Explain Mumbai has a large slum called Dharavi. It is home to about one million people.

Revisit the I think… I know… I wonder… statements.

Now ask the children to re-write their statements. Has your thinking changed? Is there anything else you would like to learn?
