Visit Dubai and learn how its transformed from a desert into a city of the future!

Lesson steps

Tell children they will be learning about Dubai and how it aligns to Global Goal 9, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

Think of definitions together. Then look at the Global Goal 9 presentation to compare.

Introducing Global Goal 9

Definitions of what Global Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

Together, use Google Earth to locate Dubai and find its artificial islands.

The artificial islands include: The Palm Jumeirah, The World, locate the Burj Khalifa, the Marina, the Dubai Mall and the Grand Mosque.

Discuss the human and physical characteristics seen.

Ask children what challenges they think would be associated with building in the desert and living in a hot climate.

Tell children that living in the desert means water is scarce. Desalination plants provide almost all of Dubai's water resources. This process removes all the salt and things we don’t need from seawater. That means it is safe to drink.

Tell children that enough clean water is one of the challenges Dubai faces.

Split into groups, cut out the Building in Dubai worksheet. List in terms of order of what you think is the MOST important to LEAST.
