World Cleanup Day 2022

Michelle Parkes ·

World Cleanup Day happens in mid September each year and unites millions of people globally to tackle the global waste problem. The aim being to build up a new and sustainable world. This year it will be on Saturday 17th September.

Sadly litter blights all parts of our planet. You can't go far without finding cigarette butts, discarded cans of energy drinks and of course plastic bottles. Not only does it look ugly but it's damaging for wildlife and fragile eco-systems.

Numerous studies around the globe find that over 45% of people admit to dropping litter at some point. How do we encourage a love and respect for our local environment and communities?

At Earth Cubs we believe that education is key to inspiring the next generation of global citizens. Encouraging kids to pick up litter shows them the impact that litter has on our environment and also makes it less likely they will drop litter in the future. This behaviour change gets passed back to families and benefits local communities.

So how can you get involved in World Cleanup Day? It's as easy as grabbing a rubbish bag and a pair of gloves! Kids love searching for litter and making where they live cleaner.

Make a game out of it and see who can find the most litter!

Sadly one day won't sort the problem out so maybe arrange to do litter picks more often. For those based in the UK there are some incredible apps out there like Litter Lotto where you can get rewarded for your positive actions!
