Vertical farming for the win

Michelle Parkes ·

In the UK we rely heavily on imported foods. In fact in 2020, almost half of all food was brought in from overseas. Needless to say this increases our carbon footprint. Wouldn’t it be great if we could eat home grown soft fruits, herbs and salad… ALL YEAR ROUND!

Introducing vertical farming! Not only can plants and food be grown all year round BUT as they are grown on vertical trays it dramatically reduces the amount of space required.

Here’s some advantages to vertical farming!

1. Keeping it green

Vertical farms use 94% less water than normal production methods. Green energy can be used to manage the farms. And, as everything is grown inside, you don’t get fertiliser run off polluting nearby waterways.

2. Consistent crops

Seasons can become a thing of the past! Quality can be well managed and a large number of crops can be grown locally. From soft fruits, to flowers, vegetables and vines. Home grown strawberries on Christmas Day with no carbon footprint?! Winner!

3. Rain rain, come again another day

Crops grown in fields are reliant on good weather to flourish. In a vertical farm you’ve got a 100% harvest certainty.

4. Better use of space

A new vertical farm being built in Gloucestershire is touted as being the largest in the world. The space inside will equate to 96 tennis courts, all stacked on top of each other.

5. No pesky pests

As the environment is totally controlled, there is no need for pesticides. Also as there is no land surface disturbance, the animals living near the farms can thrive.

Watch this space as vertical farming increases in popularity and hopefully leads to more fruit and vegetables being grown locally.
